SXSW Preview: Mime Game

As Kansas City quartet Mime Game prepare for their trek to Austin for South by Southwest, lead singer Dillon DeVoe was kind enough to answer a few questions for us about the trip, his band, and the next phase in Mime Game’s evolution.

And while you’re reading, don’t miss the official video for their new song, “Do You”.

How would you describe your style of music to people who haven’t heard you before?
We are alternative rock for people who like pop/punk and Bon Iver. We love to bring new and different elements into music that we love and that we grew up with. There’s a lot of jazz influence in the rhythm section and in the leads but my songwriting takes on a more folky approach. We really just love anything that sounds good and we love to play whatever feels right without throwing our fans for too much of a loop. In short, we love to make you sing and dance and have a good time while making you feel a tinge of nostalgia, swirled with the sense that we aren’t recycling, regurgitating or rehashing any ideas in a trite or disrespectful way.

As SXSW first-timers, what are your expectations as you prepare to head south?
Well, I personally have been with my old band, Josephine Collective, and Dalton and Chris and I came down as Mime Game last year with a different drummer and wreaked a little bit of havoc, but the world has not yet met our incredible new drummer and he is in fact a SXSW virgin. I think it’s going to be a blast to show the world what we’ve been working on. In all reality, it FEELS like the first time for this band because it kind of is. We’ve grown so much and we have a new heartbeat and we’ve written more defining and identifiable music, so it feels like rapture honestly. We get to go down there with the prior experience that will keep our heads level during the experience but also feeling like a fresh, new band that is experiencing SXSW for the first time.

When not performing, what else are you planning to do while in Austin?
We have a lot of friends who we’ll reconnect with, we’ll definitely get some Torchy’s Tacos and Big Bite, and we’ve RSVP’d to a lot of events that we’re not playing. We have a lot of interviews on the docket too, including one with Property of Zack that should be pretty cool. Mostly, I’m gonna be chugging water and making new friends because I personally feel like that’s the whole point of SXSW. It’s a huge networking experience where you go to have fun and meet cool people who are also in the industry that you’re in and we love it.

What’s next for Mime Game after SXSW?
Recording! We have two albums worth of material written so it’s about time to get in and do one of them. Hopefully we’ll be doing our next record before we go out on tour with Analog Rebellion in June. If not then we should be recording by August or even July. Mainly, it’s time for the Mimes to kick it in to high gear and that’s exactly what we’re doing on our way to and through SXSW.

Thanks Dillon!
