Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit – If We Were Vampires
I must admit to only recently “discovering” Jason Isbell, and while his reputation and style preceded him, his last two albums – Southeastern (2013) and Something More Than Free (2015) – more than cemented his place as a premier songwriter and storyteller. If you followed the pattern above you’ll recognize that now, in 2017, it’s time for a new album, this time with the 400 unit to accompany him; Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s The Nashville Sound will be out June 16th via Southeastern Records.
A new track off the album brings us to today’s posting, and a fine one at that. “If We Were Vampires” is sweet and tender and honest, and plays the harmonies between Isbell and his wife Amanda Shires beautifully.
A wedding song should be sweepingly romantic, redolent of crushed organza and almond fondant; a marriage song must confront reality, the downsides of shared days and the resilience that helps a couple overcome them. – Ann Powers, NPR
Powers sums it up the honesty and beauty perfectly. Check out the new song below.
