At The Gates – At War With Reality

After 11 years of inactivity and reunion tours with constant refusals that there would be a new album, the ravenous horde are to rejoice with the coming of At The Gates’ 5th official album At War With Reality.

If you don’t know their history, Gothenburg’s finest not only revolutionized the Swedish death metal scene, their influence was so widespread that thanks to their seminal 1995 recordSlaughter Of The Soul, their sound is one that has influenced many metal and metalcore bands. There would be no Unearth, Shadows Fall, All That Remains, Aftershock, Chimaira, and many others.

From the spoken intro “El Altar Del Dios Desconocido” and straight into “Death And The Labyrinth”, any notions that this is going to be Slaughter Of The Soul Part II is blown out of the water.

The vicious “broken glass” vocals of Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg are as visceral as ever, the pounding drums of Adrian Erlandsson are as great as ever, and bass player Jonas Bjorler and Anders Bjorler & Martin Larsson completing the group with the twin guitar melodies have spawned a million bands to emulate their style. Not since Iron Maiden has a style been so taken and used and passed off as something new and inventive.

To say that they had a lot to live up to would be a massive understatement, but the trappings of being so influential and widely loved have been avoided and rightly so. At War With Reality is another bench mark of quality metal that should be a staple in any music collection.
